1. assure VS ensure VS insure
assure (verb) to make certain (assure someone) (ทำให้เชื่อมั่น)
ensure (verb) to make certain (รับรอง รับประกัน)
insure (verb) to secure from harm; to secure life or property in case of loss (ทำประกัน)
Example : The Prime Minister assured the electorate that taxes would not be increased after the election.
The airline is taking steps to ensure safety on its aircraft.
The house is insured for two million dollars.
2. beside VS besides
beside (prep.) next to (ข้างๆ)
besides (adverb) in addition to (นอกจากนี้)
Example :
Our school was built right beside a river
Do you play any other sports besides basketball?
3. bibliography VS biography
bibliography (noun) list of writings (บรรณานุกรม)
biography (noun) a life story (ชีวประวัติ)
Example : Other sources of information are found in the bibliography at the end of this article. The biography is woven from the many accounts which exist of things she did.
4. capital VS capitol
capital (noun) money invested; a town or city where the government sits (เงินทุน เมืองหลวง)
capitol (noun) a government building (หน่วยงานรัฐ)
Example : London used to be the financial capital of the world.
This is the Capitol of the United States.
5. cite VS sight VS site
cite (verb) to acknowledge; to quote as a reference (อ้างอิง)
sight (noun) the ability to see; vision (สายตา วิสัยทัศน์)
site (noun) a place or location (สถานที่ตั้ง)
Example : She cited three reasons why people get into debt. If your sight is poor, you should not drive a car. The company hasn't yet chosen the site for the new hospital.
6. complement VS compliment
complement (noun) match (ความสมบูรณ์)
compliment (noun) praise; to give praise (คำชมเชย)
Example :
The music complements her voice perfectly.
You should take it as a compliment when I fall asleep in your company - it means I'm relaxed.
7. consul VS council VS counsel
consul (noun) an official appointed by the government to live in a foreign city and attend to the interests of the official’s country (กงสุล)
council (noun) a group of people called together to provide advice (คณะกรรมการ)
counsel (noun, verb) advice; to give advice (ข้อเสนอแนะ)
Example : The principle of granting to the consuls a specific ceremonial was rejected by the beylical court. This play is supported by a grant from the local arts council.
The police have provided experts to counsel local people affected by the tragedy.
8. continual VS continuous
continual (adjective) taking place in close succession (ต่อเนื่อง)
continuous (adjective) without break or let up (ติดต่อกัน)
Example : I've had continual problems with this car ever since I bought it. After a couple of days of continuous use, the costumes began to pong.
9. cooperation VS corporation
cooperation (noun) assistance; help (การร่วมมือกัน)
corporation (noun) type of business organization (บริษัท)
Example :
This documentary was made with the cooperation of the victims' families.
She didn't want to work for a big corporation where everything was so impersonal.
10. decent VS descent VS dissent
decent (adjective) well mannered (เหมาะสม)
descent (noun) decline; fall (การตกลงมา การตกทอด)
dissent (noun) disagreement (การขัดแย้ง)
Example : Everyone should be entitled to a decent wage/standard of living. She's a woman of mixed/French descent. When the time came to approve the proposal, there were one or two voices of dissent.
