สำหรับใครที่กำลังเรียน IELTS/ ติว IELTS Speaking แล้วรู้สึกว่าการพูดภาษาอังกฤษของตัวเองมันดู ไม่เป็นธรรมชาติเอาซะเลย ดูติดๆ ขัดๆ อยู่ตลอด นั่นอาจจะเป็นเพราะเราไม่รู้จัก Idiom ก็ได้
จะเรียน IELTS / ติว IELTS Speaking นั้น จะพลาด idiom ไปไม่ได้จริงๆ เพราะการใช้ Idiom ที่ถูกต้อง เหมาะสม ถูกที่ ถูกเวลานั้น จะเป็นตัวบอกชัดเจนว่า น้องใช้ภาษาได้มั่นใจ และเป็นธรรมชาติมากน้อยแค่ไหน น้องจะถูกจัดให้อยู่ในกลุ่ม "นักเรียนต่างชาติ" หรือ "เจ้าของภาษา" ก็ดูกันที่การใช้ idiom นี่แหละ
หากเราวาง idiom ไว้ถูกที่ ถูกเวลา รับรองว่าคะแนน IELTS Speaking ต้องอัพขึ้นอย่างเห็นได้ชัด ในทางตรงข้าม หากน้องใช้มัน ผิดที่ ผิดทาง คะแนนก็จะหายวับไปเลยเช่นกัน ว่าแต่ พูดมาตั้งนานแล้ว สรูป Idiom มันคืออะไร?
Idiom คือ กลุ่มคำ ( หรือคำเดียวก็ได้) ที่จับมารวมอยู่ด้วยกัน แล้วมีความหมายซ่อนอยู่ภายใน ไม่ได้แปลตรงตัวอย่างที่เห็น ซึ่งในภาษาอังกฤษมี idiom เยอะมากกกกก แต่พี่ๆ KPH ก็ไม่รอช้า คัด Idiom มาให้เฉพาะอันที่เด็ดๆ คำที่น่าจะได้ใช้ ถ้าใช้แล้วภาษาจะดูดี ดูสวย ดูเหมือนเจ้าของภาษา สำหรับใครที่พร้อมจะท่องแล้ว ก็เลื่อนลงไปดุได้เลย
At all costs = at any costs : To do everything you can to achieve something regardless of difficulty, and expense involved
- ทำทุกวิถีทาง เพื่อบรรลุเป้าหมาย โดยไม่สนใจความยากลำบาก
-ตัวอย่าง : We must protect our environment at all cost
Bump into somebody : meet somebody by chance.
- พบโดยบังเอิญ
- ตัวอย่าง : I bump into my old friend a couple of days ago.
Call it a day : To stop working, to end a job
- เสร็จงาน จบวัน
- ตัวอย่าง : When it's time to call it a day, everyone leaves the company without hesitation.
Don't judge a book by its cover : do not judge someone or something only from their appearance
- อย่าตัดสินคนอื่นจากภายนอก
- ตัวอย่าง : This actor looks awkward, but she's brilliant in what she does. Therefore, do not judge the book by its cover.
Explore all avenues : to try everything in order to find a solution and avoid trouble.
- สำรวจทุกหนทาง ลองทุกอย่าง เพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงปัญหา
- ตัวอย่าง : What differentiates entrepreneurs from employees is because they explore all avenues.
Figure something out : finds a way to solve a problem.
- หาทางแก้ไข
- ตัวอย่าง : The government need to figure out how to cope with the effect of climate change.
Give someone a hand : To give someone help or assistance
- ให้ความช่วยเหลือ
- ตัวอย่าง : Friends are someone who always give me hand when I need.
Have a made crush on someone : To have a great romantic interest in someone.
- ชอบ แอบชอบ
ตัวอย่าง : I have a crush on this guy.
In deep water : To be in trouble or in a difficult or dangerous situation
- มีปัญหาใหญ่ ตกในสถานการณ์ที่ย่ำแย่
- ตัวอย่าง : The government is currently is deep water due to the demonstration.
Jump for joy: be really happy/ excited about something.
- มีความสุข ตื่นเต้น
- ตัวอย่าง : My pet always jump for joy whenever he get food.
Keep one's chin up : to be brave and cheerful even though you are in a difficult situation.
- มีกำลังใจ แม้จะอยู่ในสถานการณ์ลำบาก
- ตัวอย่าง : My parents always tell me to keep my chin up whenever I feel down.
Let's face it : talking about the fact/truth that needs to be accepted even though you might not want it to happen.
- เผชิญหน้ากับความเป็นจริง ยอมรับความจริง
- ตัวอย่าง: The government claimed to reopen the country within 120 days. But let's face it, it is nearly impossible.
Miss the boat : to miss a chance or opportunity to do something by not taking action quickly enough.
- พลาดโอกาส เพราะตัดสินใจช้าเกินไป
- ตัวอย่าง : You had better make a decision, otherwise you'll miss the boat of becoming the head of the project.
Needless to say / it goes without saying that : obviously
- เห็นได้ชัดเจน โดยไม่ต้องพูด
- ตัวอย่าง : Needless to say, the government cannot cope with the current problem.
Once in a while : not regularly; from time to time.
- นานๆ ครั้ง เป็นครั้งคราว ชั่วครั้งชั่วคราว
- ตัวอย่าง: Every once in a while, I go back to my birthplace and see how it has changed throughout these years.
Put yourself in somebody's shoes: to imagine that you are in somebody's situation or circumstances in order to understand his/her feelings, opinion, or point of view.
- เอาใจเรา ใส่ใจเขา
- ตัวอย่าง : If you put yourself in your parents' shoes, you will realize how hard it is to raise a child.
To ring the bell : to sound familiar.
- เหมือนเคยได้ยิน หรือ คุ้น ๆ ซึ่งเป็นความรู้สึก คุ้นเคยเหมือนเคยได้ยินคำหรือเหตุการณ์หนึ่ง แต่จำไม่ได้อย่างแน่นอน
- ตัวอย่าง : His name didn't ring the bell until I actually met him.
Sleep on it: to think more about something before making a decision.
- เก็บไปคิด ก่อนจะตัดสินใจ
- ตัวอย่าง : Would you please let a man sleep on it?
To talk someone into something : to convince or persuade someone to do something.
- โน้มน้าว เพื่อให้เข้าร่วม
- ตัวอย่าง : John talked me into this project.
Under one's breath : quietly; in a very quiet voice.
- เงียบ เบาๆ
- ตัวอย่าง: He talks under his breath.
To work one's tail off : to work very hard.
- ทำงานหนัก
- ตัวอย่าง: Since I was accepted into this company, I have worked my tail off.
อย่าลืม เอา Idiom เหล่านี้ ไปฝึกใช้ๆ เยอะ โดยเฉพาะใน Part Speaking รับรองว่า idiom เหล่านี้ จะทำให้การเรียน IELTS/ ติว IELTS Speaking ไม่ติดขัด และพูด flow ขึนอีกเยอะ ส่วนใครที่รู้สึกว่ายังไม่คล่อง ก็ทักมาหา KPH เลย พี่ๆ มีเทคนิคดีๆ ให้น้องๆ อีกเยอะ
